Care for older persons in Southeast Asia in the view of social support and social security lectured by ERIA expert Dr. Liem Nguyen for Juntendo University Graduate Students
Department of Global Health Research, Juntendo University and DIHAC study team acknowledged an invited lecture of Dr. Liem Nguyen, PhD who is Programme Manager on Social Welfare, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA). ERIA is an international organization established in Jakarta, Indonesia, with contributions from 16 East Asian countries and a leading organization of regional research and policy.
The lecture was hosted by Graduate School of Medicine, Juntendo university in the series of Online Advanced Global Health on 9th June 2025 in Zoom. The title of the lecture was “Care for Older persons in Southeast Asia in the view of social support and social security” Students from ASEAN countries, Japan, China, Nepal, Pakistan and Mexico attended the lecture. Professors from Japan and India also joined the lecture.
The lecture presented the latest data on population ageing in Southeast Asian countries (ASEAN) which are very convincing to advocate why ASEAN countries need priority in political agendas to address population ageing. He explained the theoretical framework of UN and WHO in the aspect of healthy ageing, active ageing, integrated care for older persons (ICOPE) and WHO International Classification of Functioning (ICF), Disability and Health Frameworks. He explained ERIA’s works on care for older persons in Southeast Asia. He introduced care diamond concept for building services for different kinds of care in micro, meso and macro levels. Furthermore, he introduced graduate students of Juntendo University with many active partner organizations such as ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation (ACAI) and Aging Prize for Asian Innovation (HAPI) in the collaboration with Asia Health and Wellbeing Initiatives (AHWIN). Finally, he explained the global and regional challenges and discussed interactively.

Course coordinator, Associate Professor Myo Nyein Aung, PI of the DIHAC study chaired the meeting. The Q&A session after the lecture were very interactive with students asking about age friendly environment in ASEAN, income and pension for older people, integration of ICOPE into countries’ health and care systems facing the challenges of adoption and validation, private public partnership for building care network and services, and convincing countries with relatively less ageing rate to start investing in healthy ageing. The discussion addressed the need for further collaboration in the region.
